The Vision Class
Who We Are
The Vision class is made up of about 50 members ranging in age from the mid-30s to early 50s. The majority of members are married couples with younger children (infant to age 10), although we have – and welcome – single members as well.
While we are generally of the same generation and same stage in life, we are a diverse group in a number of ways:
- We come from different areas of the country
- We come from different countries (Germany & China among them)
- We come from different denominations and religious backgrounds (Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, agnostic, etc.)
- We have different ideas, perspectives and opinions
What truly distinguishes our class is neither our sameness nor our diversity, but rather our mutual respect for one another, our open, tolerant sharing of our thoughts and beliefs, our Christian embrace of each other and of new members, and our mutual striving for spiritual growth in a comfortable, social environment.

What We Do in Class
We meet weekly and follow a broad-based curriculum of our own design that is led or taught on a rotating basis by volunteer members of our class, by other members of our congregation (several clergy members among them), and by our assistant and senior pastor. Our ever-changing course of study has included:
- Reading and discussing books on various aspects of Christianity (grace, the apostles, Lent)
- Comparatively studying other Protestant denominations, Catholicism and other religions
- Reading, sharing and seeking the deeper spiritual meaning of the Bible – beyond the literal interpretation
Every class session includes open and honest discourse, the sharing of wisdom – and wit – from all members who wish to speak, breakfast (brought each week by a different member) and coffee, fellowship and friendship. We meaningfully discuss and seek spiritual growth in the pursuit of becoming better Christians, and we try to have fun doing it.
What We Do Out of Class
Beyond our classroom study, we strive to further the mission and outreach of the church, individually and as a group. Our ministry includes: tending the grounds of a Methodist-run convalescent center; collecting donations and gifts for a battered women’s shelter; singing Christmas carols at a nursing home; doing the work to support various ministries within the church (such as English as a Second Language classes); serving on church committees; working in the Children’s Ministry, Sunday School classes and nursery.
We also strengthen our friendships through a number of regular social events (with and without kids), including:
- Monthly Ladies’ Night Out and Guys’ Night Out
- Annual White Elephant Christmas Party, and our annual Men’s Cook-off
- Group bowling, trivia nights and various other parties
- Family picnics, Halloween pumpkin carving and game nights
Please visit us Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in room 401.
